How I Spent Less During My Trip to Garki, Abuja

Last summer I enjoyed my vacation in Abuja. It took meticulous planning and discipline to pull it off as I was on a tight budget. I am a team #repNaija, so traveling to Abuja for me counts as a vacay, I don’t have to cross the red sea, board a plane or leave my country!

So that said, Abuja is a cosmopolitan city with exquisite parks, hills, famous landmarks and enchanting beauty – it is every traveler’s dream. I am going to share with you how I spent an awesome vacation in Garki, Abuja even with my tight budget.

Below, I have put together some tips to help you find cheap accommodations in Abuja and save money on transportation and food like I did during my visit to Abuja.

 Set Your Daily Spending Limit

When going on vacation, it is always advisable to set a spending limit and stick to it. This might mean camping, cooking your own meals and staying in cheap hotels. But going by my assessments of most hotel deals, I couldn’t get a good hotel in Abuja for less than 20,000 Naira (about $50) per night in Garki – I guess because it is one of the prominent and finest cities in Abuja.  I wanted badly to stay in one of the finest luxury hotels like Sheraton hotel Abuja, Transcorp Hilton Abuja, Reiz continental and Valencia Hotel Abuja, but that will triple my budget and make me spend more than budgeted – so despite the urge – I decided to cut my coat according to my size.

I also survived by eating out at local restaurants (Village Kitchen is good) and doing most of my shopping in the popular Garki International Market. By this I was able to able to stick to my maximum budget of 10,000 naira daily (accommodation, transportation, sightseeing and feeding included).

Book In Advance

My advice on booking an accommodation in Garki before arrival is that, make sure that is all you are paying for. Some hotel booking websites like Jovago allows you specify rooms without breakfast options, hence reducing hotel costs.

Also if you are flying down, ensure you don’t make your flight reservation for peak periods like Fridays and Saturdays. If possible, a road trip will save you a great deal of cash and you get to see beautiful landscapes and new cities along your way. You can also do some research on your points of interest in Abuja and how much it will cost you – this will help well in shaping your budget.

Staying With Locals

Just when I thought I had made some great savings on hotels, I ran into luck when I met an old friend at Garki International Market. She was more than graciously-welcoming to allow me spend the last three nights of my vacation at her house, she made the vacation more fun for me, it was like the best days were saved for the last! Only if I had met her early enough, I would have saved myself some great deal of money on the 5500 naira per night hotel I booked and even feeding too. So I would say, if you know an old friend, or a friend who knows a friend who lives in Abuja, staying with them will cut down your expenses a great deal!
